The world around us is changing rapidly. Technology replaces toys, and screens replace paper. Yet, the world of childhood remains the same. Children's fears, dreams, games, and first discoveries do not depend on the century.
A.A. Milne did not plan to become a children's author and poet: he was a successful playwright and novelist writing for adults. However, worldwide fame came to him through his children's collections, When We Were Very Young (1924) and Now We Are Six (1927). These books, along with the Winnie-the-Pooh stories, cemented his name in literary history, eclipsing all his "adult" work.
Milne's poetry is devoid of didacticism: the author does not preach to the child but speaks as an equal. He brilliantly captures child psychology, valuing vivid emotions over adult "correct" ideals. His characters give names to raindrops, turn chairs into entire worlds, and genuinely fear bears on city streets. This sincerity has turned his books into a true treasure that remains timeless even a century later.
When I began working on the translation, I strived for maximum accuracy, bordering on literalism. But as the work progressed, this approach changed: I realized that translating children's poetry is primarily an attempt to preserve its soul. Instead of chasing formal similarity, it was more important to find the right resonance in the Russian language. I hope I managed to convey that very "Milne" intonation—its lightness and spontaneity—even if it meant selecting different rhythms and consonances.
Where literal translation hindered the poetry, priority was given to the imagery and lightness of the verse. I hope the result is poetry that captivates both when read silently and aloud, with rhymes that naturally stick in the mind. This is not an academic approach, but an attempt to bring Milne closer to the modern child.
Each poem is accompanied by a full-page illustration spanning the spread, turning the book into a cohesive visual journey. The artist carefully sought to recreate the atmosphere of the 1920s—the era in which these lines were born.
The illustrations are digitally rendered in a watercolor and ink style. This approach preserves the warmth and "living breath" of traditional book illustration. The large, approximately 8 x 11 inch format allows the details to 'breathe,' inviting the child to spend time carefully examining each scene.
The edition is presented in a bilingual format: the Russian translation is complemented by the original English text. This turns reading into a natural way to familiarize oneself with the language.
Milne's poems are a gold standard of British classics, featuring accessible language and flawless rhythm. Because the child is already familiar with the plot and imagery through the Russian translation, the English text is perceived not as a study exercise, but as a living, understandable story. This approach breaks down the language barrier, making it easy to memorize new words and the melody of English speech.
The book will also serve as an excellent resource for English-speaking children learning Russian. The familiar childhood imagery and rhythms of Milne will help them grasp Russian vocabulary more easily and feel the nuances of another language through plots that are already native and understandable to them.
This edition is a fully realized gift book concept. It is a 64-page hardcover with a trim size of approx. 8.25 x 11.4 in (210 x 290 mm).We’ve completed a trial run to confirm consistent results across printing, color, and final assembly. The book physically exists and is ready for full-scale production.
Public Domain Status: In the United States, the collection When We Were Very Young (1924) entered the public domain in 2020, and Now We Are Six (1927) followed in 2023. In Europe, A.A. Milne's original texts will enter the public domain on January 1, 2027. This frees the publisher from the need to acquire expensive foreign licenses.
